Pet Acupuncture FAQs
What is Veterinary Acupuncture?
Veterinary Acupuncture is a type of therapy that helps decrease pain and improves overall health. It works by stimulating specific points on your pet’s body by insertion of thin sterile needles. Stimulation of these points increases the activity of your pet’s nervous and circulatory system. At Luv-N-Care Animal Hospital, we use traditional needle acupuncture as well as electro-stimulation, aqua-acupuncture, and cold laser therapy!Does Acupuncture hurt?
Rarely! Acupuncture is not painful because the points on your pet’s body are stimulated using very fine needles, almost as thin as a hair. Over 95% of patients are comfortable with acupuncture therapy. Due to the relaxation effect, some animals will fall asleep during treatments.
Is Acupuncture safe?
Yes! Acupuncture is a very safe medical procedure when administered by a qualified holistic practitioner. Very few negative effects have been found in clinical cases. How long does each treatment take?
Each session may take 20 to 45 minutes. The first session usually takes longer than follow up appointments. How many treatments are needed?
As in all medicine, this depends on your pet’s needs and can be done on a daily, weekly, monthly or even further apart schedule depending on the chronicity and severity of the condition. When is Acupuncture recommended?

- Hormone and reproductive regulation
- Antifebrile effects
Is there any scientific evidence on how Acupuncture works?
Modern research shows that acupoints are located in the areas where there are a high density of free nerve endings, mast cells, small arterioles, and lymphatic vessels. Most acupoints are also motor points. A great number of studies indicate that the stimulation of acupoints induces the release of beta-endorphins, serotonin, and other neurotransmitters. The US National Institute of Health’s National Library of Medicine (www.pubmed.gov) has over 25,000 research papers regarding acupuncture and over 400 animal specific articles. Please call to schedule your appointment with our holistic practitioner, and prior to your first appointment, complete the acupuncture form below.
