TPLO Surgery for Dogs

Helping Pets Move Comfortably Again

At Luv-N-Care Animal Hospital, we understand how heartbreaking it is to see your dog in pain—especially when it affects their ability to run, play, and move comfortably. If your pet has been diagnosed with a cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) tear, Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy (TPLO) surgery is a proven, effective solution to treat it.

Why Is My Dog Limping? Understanding CCL Tears

The cranial cruciate ligament stabilizes your dog’s knee (stifle) joint. When it’s torn or ruptured, the joint becomes unstable, causing limping, pain, inflammation, and long-term joint damage such as arthritis. Unlike in people, dogs don’t recover from a torn CCL without surgical support.

While some smaller or less active pets benefit from conservative management, surgery is the best way to relieve pain, restore function, and protect the joint long-term. Think of the CCL as the canine equivalent of the ACL in humans—and TPLO as the orthopedic gold standard for fixing it.

How TPLO Surgery Helps Your Dog Walk Again

TPLO surgery changes the biomechanics of your dog’s knee joint rather than replacing the torn ligament. During the procedure, the surgeon cuts and rotates the top of the tibia (shin bone) to flatten the natural slope of the knee joint. This adjustment prevents the femur (thigh bone) from sliding forward with each step and allows your dog to walk, and bear weight on the leg without relying on the damaged ligament for stability.

Is TPLO Right for My Dog?

TPLO is recommended for:

  • Medium to large breed dogs
  • Active or athletic dogs
  • Pets with full or partial CCL tears
  • Dogs not responding to rest or medication
